The AI Overview effect
Not sure yet, so the headline assumes no AI Overview (184 clicks gained). If one does appear, the same move is worth about 114 clicks when you’re cited, or 52 when you’re not — a 38% to 72% haircut (Seer Interactive, 2026).
Heads up: page-2 positions (11–20) use a conservative modelled CTR, not a published study figure — real page-2 clicks are marginal. See the method notes below.

The sources, in the open
We verified each figure against its source before publishing it. The click-through rates below are the engine of the calculator.
| Position | Avg. CTR |
|---|---|
| Position 1 | 39.8% |
| Position 2 | 18.7% |
| Position 3 | 10.2% |
| Position 4 | 7.2% |
| Position 5 | 5.1% |
| Position 6 | 4.4% |
| Position 7 | 3% |
| Position 8 | 2.1% |
| Position 9 | 1.9% |
| Position 10 | 1.6% |
Positions 11–20 (page 2) aren’t broken out by public studies, so we use a conservative modelled tail — all under 1%, decaying to ~0.3% at position 20. It’s directional only, and flagged in the tool whenever you use it.

Honest caveat: CTR curves are averages across millions of searches, and AI Overview effects vary a lot by query type — informational searches lose more clicks than transactional ones. Use this to size the opportunity, not as a precise forecast for one keyword.

Fair questions
Why is the #1 CTR so much higher than everything else?
Clicks concentrate hard at the top. The FirstPageSage click-through study in the table above puts position 1 around 40% of clicks and position 5 near 5% — the drop-off is steep, which is exactly why moving up a few spots is worth so much.
How do AI Overviews change this?
When Google shows an AI Overview, fewer people click the blue links. Seer Interactive measured organic clicks falling about 38% when you’re cited in the overview, and about 72% when you’re not — and being cited is worth roughly +120% more clicks than being left out.
Are these exact numbers for my site?
No — they’re averages across millions of searches. Your real CTR depends on your title, brand, intent and the rest of the results page. Treat the output as a well-grounded estimate of the size of the opportunity.
Are you even in the AI Overview?
Being cited is worth +120% more clicks — but first AI has to be able to read and trust your site. Run a free, live AI visibility check, or book a free call and we’ll take a look together.
